The Tunisian dinar is the official currency of Tunisia, divided into 1000 millimes. It is issued by the Central Bank of Tunisia, with banknotes in 5, 10, 20, and 50 dinars, and coins in 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 millimes, as well as ½, 1, 2, and 5 dinars.
Introduced in 1960, the dinar replaced the franc at a rate of 1 dinar to 1000 francs. From 2000 to 2010, it was particularly unstable due to neighboring countries' involvement in oil imports and economic adjustments.
The import and export of dinars in Tunisia is illegal and can result in penalties. Each year, citizens can convert up to 6000 Tunisian dinars in foreign currency before leaving the country.
