The Tajikistani somoni is the official currency of Tajikistan, divided into 100 dirams. It is issued by the National Bank of Tajikistan, with banknotes in denominations of 1, 5, 20, 50 dirams and 1, 2, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 somoni. Coins include 1, 5, 10, 20, 25, and 50 dirams, and 1, 3, and 5 somoni.
The somoni was introduced in 2000, replacing the Tajikistani ruble at a rate of 1 somoni to 1000 rubles. Coins were introduced in 2001 to create a more effective currency system.
The introduction of the somoni marked a historic event in Tajikistan with the first-ever coins being issued in 2001. The second series of coins came in 2011, but it did not include the 1 and 3 somoni denominations.
