The Serbian dinar is the official currency of Serbia, divided into 100 paras. It is issued by the National Bank of Serbia, with banknotes in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 5000 dinars, and coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 dinars, and 50 paras.
The dinar was first mentioned in 1214 and was used until 1459. The modern dinar appeared in 1868 and was in use until 1920 but was discontinued due to World War I. The current dinar was reintroduced in 1941 and is still in use today.
The dinar is a third-series currency. It replaced the Yugoslav dinar when Serbia declared independence from Montenegro and the disputed Kosovo territory. Despite the introduction of the Euro, the Serbian dinar is still widely used in surrounding regions.
