The Romanian leu is the official currency of Romania, divided into 100 bani. The currency is issued by the National Bank of Romania. Banknotes in circulation include denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200, and 500 lei, and coins come in 1, 5, 10, and 50 bani.
The first leu was introduced in 1867, but it was only minted in Romania in 1870. Until 1878, the Russian ruble was used, but its high value displaced the leu. In 1941, the leu was reintroduced and continues to be used in Romania today.
The leu has been revalued four times: in 1941, 1947, 1952, and 2005. After the last revaluation, 1 new leu became worth 10,000 old lei. The Romanian leu is made from polymer (plastic).
