The Pakistani rupee is Pakistan's official currency and is also used unofficially in Afghanistan. It is issued by the State Bank of Pakistan, with banknotes in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000, and 5000 rupees, and coins in 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 rupees.
Introduced in 1947, the rupee was initially equivalent to the Indian rupee. In 1961, it was subdivided into 100 paisas, but paisas were discontinued in 1994.
