The Mozambican metical is Mozambique's official currency, issued by the central bank. It is divided into 100 centavos, with banknotes ranging from 20 to 1000 meticals, and coins in ½, 1, 5, and 10 meticals.
The metical was introduced in 1980 and revalued in 2005 due to high inflation. Later, Mozambique briefly used the Zimbabwean dollar. The metical was reintroduced in 2006, with a new series of notes released in 2012.
During the second metical series, centavos were discontinued due to economic crisis, and all centavos were bought back by the central bank.
