The Mexican peso is Mexico's official currency, issued by the central bank. It is divided into 100 centavos, with banknotes ranging from 20 to 1000 pesos, and coins in 1, 2, 5, and 10 pesos, as well as 5, 10, 20, and 50 centavos.
First issued in 1863, the Mexican peso was one of the most stable Latin American currencies throughout the 20th century, avoiding hyperinflation.
The term "peso" was originally used to refer to "peso oro" (gold weight) or "peso plata" (silver weight).
