The Malagasy ariary is Madagascar's official currency, divided into 5 iraimbilanja. Banknotes range from 100 to 10,000 ariary, and coins are in 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 50 ariary and 1, 2 iraimbilanja.
Introduced in 2005, the ariary replaced the Malagasy franc. Although the franc symbol still appears on some banknotes, the ariary symbol is more prominent.
The ariary is derived from pre-colonial currency, with "ariary" meaning "one iron weight," an ancient term for coin value.
