The Lebanese pound is Lebanon's official currency, divided into 100 piasters. Banknotes range from 1000 to 100,000 pounds, and coins are in denominations of 50, 100, 250, and 500 pounds.
Before the Lebanese pound, Lebanon used the Syrian pound, pegged to the French franc. Lebanon started minting its own coins in 1924, and by 1925, its currency was independent. After WWII, the Lebanese pound became fully independent.
Coins were initially minted with different designs, causing confusion, but since 1986, a single design has been used for all coins, making earlier ones obsolete.
