The Kuwaiti dinar is Kuwait's official currency, divided into 1000 fils. Banknotes range from ¼ to 20 dinars, and coins are in 5 to 100 fils.
It replaced the Gulf rupee in 1961. During the Gulf War, Iraq circulated Iraqi dinars, but Kuwait restored its currency after the occupation.
The dinar's design has changed little since 1961, so many worn-out notes are still in circulation, often confusing tourists.
