The Kenyan shilling is Kenya's official currency, divided into 100 cents. Banknotes come in denominations of 10 to 1000 shillings, while coins range from 1 to 40 shillings and 5 to 50 cents.
It became Kenya's official currency in 1966, replacing the East African shilling at an equal value.
The shilling's value dropped due to declining tea exports, falling from 83 to 105 shillings per US dollar in 2011. However, recent increases in tea exports may strengthen its value.
