The Ethiopian Birr (ETB) is the official currency of Ethiopia, divided into 100 santim. Banknotes are issued in 1, 5, 10, 50, and 100 denominations, with coins in 1 birr and 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 santim. Introduced in 1855, its name means "silver" in Amharic. It became Ethiopia's sole currency in 1893 and was reinstated as the national currency after World War II. The first paper notes were printed in 1915 as talari, and the National Bank of Ethiopia began issuing new notes in 1963.
