The Chilean peso (CLP) is the official currency of Chile. Banknotes are available in 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, and 20,000 pesos, while coins come in 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 500 pesos. The peso symbol is similar to the dollar sign. The current peso has been in use since 1975, replacing an earlier version used from 1817 to 1960. Although one peso is officially divided into 100 centavos, no centavo coins are in circulation. Originally minted in gold and silver, copper coins were introduced after World War II.
