The Turkmenistani manat is the official currency of Turkmenistan. One manat is divided into 100 tenges. This currency is issued by the Central Bank of Turkmenistan. In circulation are banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 500 manat, and coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 tenges and 1 manat.
History of the Turkmenistani Manat
The first manat replaced the Soviet ruble. In 1993, the first manat was introduced, and all the banknotes featured the former president, Serdar Saparmurat Turkmenbashi the Great.
Turkmenistani Manat and Interesting Facts
The word manat is borrowed from the Persian word munat and the Russian word монета, meaning coin. In 1999, due to high inflation, 500 and 1000 manat coins were issued, but these were withdrawn in 2005. The coins were made of coated steel.
