The Turkish lira is the official currency of Turkey, introduced on January 1, 2005. The new Turkish lira replaced the old Turkish lira. 1 new Turkish lira is equal to 1,000,000 old liras. The new lira is subdivided into 100 new kuruş.

History of the Turkish Lira

The Turkish lira is one of the oldest currencies in Europe. This currency was also partially used by France and Italy. According to historical sources, the name of the currency originated in ancient Rome from the word 'Libra', which once partly referred to a unit of measurement, and is now associated with the pound.

The new Turkish lira is used by Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is officially recognized by Turkey. The symbol of the Turkish lira was created only in 2012, and it was officially designed by the Central Bank of Turkey.
