The Tanzanian shilling is the official currency of Tanzania. One shilling is divided into 100 cents. This currency is issued by the Central Bank of Tanzania. In circulation are 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10,000 shilling banknotes, as well as 50, 100, 200, and 500 shilling coins.

History of the Tanzanian Shilling

On June 14, 1966, the Tanzanian shilling banknotes were first introduced, with denominations of 5, 10, 20, and 100. New series of banknotes and coins are issued every 10 years on average, but due to poor economic conditions, their value has significantly decreased since 1995.

The symbol of the Tanzanian shilling banknote represents an x/y form, where x stands for shillings and y represents cents. The Tanzanian coins were designed by the famous coin designer Christopher Ironside, who created designs for more than 10 countries' coins and is featured on some of the coins.
