The Syrian pound is the official currency of Syria. One pound is divided into 100 piasters. This currency is issued by the Central Bank of Syria. In circulation are banknotes of 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 2000 pounds, and coins of 5, 10, 25, and 50 pounds.
History of the Syrian Pound
The Syrian pound was introduced in 1919 and was pegged to the value of 20 French francs. At the same time, the Egyptian pound was also used in Syria. In 1941, the Syrian pound was pegged to the British pound and remained so until 1961.

Due to the 2011 Syrian Civil War and the sanctions imposed, Syria was no longer able to conduct foreign trade with neighboring countries. This crisis severely impacted both Syrian and Lebanese banks, and their economic situation significantly worsened.
