Swedish krona SEK

The Swedish krona is the official currency of Sweden. The word "krona" means "crown." It has been the official currency of Sweden since 1873. One krona is divided into 100 öre, although their validity ended in 2010. The Swedish krona is among the top 10 most popular currencies in the world.

History of the Swedish Krona

The Swedish krona replaced the previous currency, the riksdaler, in 1876, and until World War I, the krona was the unified currency of the Scandinavian countries. At that time, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway all used the krona. However, after these countries separated, each country continued using kronas with their own national symbols.

The current series of Swedish coins was introduced in 2012, replacing the previous ones. The new coins featured a fresh design, and with the release of this new coin set, the two-krona coin returned to circulation.

Swedish Krona and Interesting Facts

The Swedish krona was weakest in 2009. However, it became the strongest in 2012, equal to the Euro, which was influenced by the Greek crisis that started in the summer of 2012 and caused fears of spreading to Italy and Spain.

As part of Sweden's 1994 accession to the Eurozone, one of the agreements was that Sweden would adopt the euro as its primary currency. However, in 2003, a referendum on the euro was held, and the majority of voters opposed the euro's introduction. To this day, Sweden continues to use the krona as its official currency.
