The Sri Lankan rupee is the official currency of Sri Lanka. One rupee is divided into 100 cents. This currency is issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Banknotes in circulation include 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, and 5000 rupees, and coins come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 cent denominations.
History of the Sri Lankan Rupee
The Sri Lankan rupee was first introduced in 1836. In that year, along with the rupee, the British pound also became legal tender, but the rupee was more widely used. By 1856, the rupee had replaced the pound, and in 1869, it became the official currency of Sri Lanka.

Coins issued by Sri Lanka since 1972 feature a symbol of armaments. This coin is currently considered inactive and illegal, and it cannot be used in any transactions. The national bank has issued a new series of coins.
