The Saudi Arabian riyal is the official currency of Saudi Arabia. One riyal is divided into 100 halalas. This currency is issued by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency. In circulation are 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 500 riyal banknotes and coins of 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 halalas, and 1, 2 riyals.

History of the Saudi Arabian Riyal

The riyal has been the currency of Saudi Arabia since the country's establishment and was one of the main currencies in the medieval oceanic region during the Ottoman era. In 1960, the riyal currency system changed, and halala coins were introduced, but they are no longer issued.

Since 1986, the riyal has been officially pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 1 US dollar equal to 3.75 riyals. This exchange rate was announced in 2003.
