The Romanian leu is the official currency of Romania. One leu is divided into 100 bani. This currency is issued by the National Bank of Romania. In circulation are banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200, 500 lei and coins of 1, 5, 10, and 50 bani.
History of the Romanian Leu
The first leu was introduced in 1867, and it was minted in Romania only in 1870. Until 1878, the Russian ruble circulated in Romania, which was valued so highly that it pushed the leu out of the market. In 1941, the leu currency was reintroduced, and it is still used in Romania today.
Interesting Facts About the Romanian Leu
The Romanian leu has been revalued four times. The first revaluation occurred in 1941, the second in 1947, the third in 1952, and the fourth in 2005. One new leu is worth 10,000 old leu. The Romanian leu is made from polymer (plastic).
