The currency is issued by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. One dollar is divided into 100 cents. Banknotes in circulation are in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 dollars, and coins are available in 10, 20, and 50 cent, as well as 1 and 2 dollar denominations.

The New Zealand dollar was introduced in 1967, replacing the British pound. The exchange rate was set at 2 dollars = 1 pound. In the same year, over 27 million banknotes were printed, and coins were minted.
