The Mozambican metical is the official currency of Mozambique. It is issued by the central bank of Mozambique. One metical is divided into 100 centavos. Banknotes in circulation include denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 meticals, and coins are available in ½, 1, 5, and 10 meticals.

History of the Mozambican Metical

The first metical was introduced in 1980. In 2005, the metical faced significant inflation and was revalued. Later, Mozambique's currency switched to the Zimbabwean dollar. The metical was reintroduced in the summer of 2006, and a new series of currency notes was issued in 2012.

Interesting Facts about the Mozambican Metical

During the second series of metical, centavos were discontinued due to the severe economic crisis. All centavos were bought back by the central bank of Mozambique.
