The Jordanian dinar is the official currency of Jordan. One Jordanian dinar is divided into 1000 fils, 10 dirhams, and 100 piasters. Jordanian dinar banknotes come in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, and 50. Coins include 0.5, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 dinar coins.
History of the Jordanian Dinar
From 1927 to the 1950s, the Palestine Currency Board issued the Palestine pound. However, after Jordan gained independence in 1946, changes were made. The Jordanian dinar became the official independent currency of Jordan in 1950.
Interesting Facts about the Jordanian Dinar
There were attempts to denominate Jordanian dinar coins in English. Initially, dirham and piaster coins were minted in English, but as this proved ineffective, dirhams and piasters eventually fell out of use.
