The Hungarian forint is the official currency of Hungary. One forint is divided into 100 filler. It is issued by the National Bank of Hungary. In circulation are banknotes of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, and 20,000 forints, as well as coins of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 forints.

History of the Hungarian Forint

The name "forint" comes from the city of Florence, where gold coins were minted in 1252. From 1868 to 1892, the currency's name was adapted to Hungarian. Due to severe hyperinflation, the forint lost its value but was reintroduced in 1946.

Interesting Facts about the Hungarian Forint

The forint is expected to be replaced by the euro soon. Hungary, being a member of the European Union, has met all the necessary requirements for this transition. Some coin denominations are already being withdrawn from circulation by the central bank.
