The Hong Kong dollar is the currency of Hong Kong, divided into 100 cents. Banknotes range from 10 to 1000 dollars, and coins from 1 to 50 cents.
Before 1841, foreign currencies like Indian rupees and Mexican coins circulated. The British pound was the main currency in the early 20th century but was gradually replaced by the Hong Kong dollar after WWII.
In 2019, the Hong Kong dollar became the ninth most traded currency globally. It is also unofficially used in neighboring Macau.
