Guinean franc is the official currency of Guinea. It is divided into 100 centimes. Banknotes are available in denominations of 100, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, and 20,000 francs, while coins come in 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 centimes.
History of the Guinean Franc
The first Guinean franc was introduced in 1959 but was replaced by the Guinean syli in 1971. In 1985, the Guinean franc was reintroduced as the national currency, at par with the syli. In the second series, 25 and 50 franc banknotes were discontinued and replaced with coins.
Interesting Facts about the Guinean Franc
Although the one-cent coin is officially recognized, none have been issued. The 500 franc banknote was introduced in 2019 due to reduced purchasing power and is currently the smallest denomination in use. The 100 franc banknote, introduced in 2015, was discontinued after just one year.
