Georgian lari is the official currency of Georgia. One lari is divided into 100 tetri. Georgian lari banknotes come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500, while coins are available in 1, 2 lari and 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 tetri.

History of the Georgian Lari

In 1993, Georgia introduced the lari, replacing the former Soviet ruble. At that time, the currency consisted only of banknotes. Coins were introduced in Georgia in 2006 with the release of the second series of the currency.

When Georgia introduced the lari in 1993, they experienced hyperinflation. In 1995, under the leadership of Eduard Shevardnadze, the lari was redenominated at a rate of one to one million, making it a much more stable currency afterward.
