The Djiboutian franc (Fdj) is the official currency of Djibouti, divided into 100 cents. Banknotes are issued in 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10,000 denominations, with a commemorative 40 franc note. Coins range from 1 to 500 francs. Established in 1884 under the French Somaliland Protectorate, it became an independent currency in 1948. After World War I, 500 and 1000 franc notes were introduced, but the 500 franc note was later replaced with a coin post-World War II as the economy improved.
