Chilean peso CLP
The Chilean peso is the official currency of Chile. Chilean peso banknotes are issued in denominations of 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, and 20,000 pesos. Coins are available in 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 500 pesos. The peso symbol is the same as the dollar sign, an "S" crossed by two vertical lines.
History of the Chilean Peso
The current peso has been in circulation in Chile since 1975. A previous version of the peso was used from 1817 to 1960. Officially, one peso is divided into 100 centavos, but no centavo coins are in circulation.
Interesting Facts About the Chilean Peso
In 2049, one US dollar was approximately 720 Chilean pesos. The first pesos were minted in gold and silver, but after World War II, copper coins were introduced.
