The Bulgarian Lev is the official currency of Bulgaria. One Lev is divided into 100 stotinki. Bulgarian Lev banknotes are available in denominations of 5, 10, 20, and 50. Coins are issued in 1 and 2 Leva, as well as 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 stotinki.
History of the Bulgarian Lev
The Lev was introduced as Bulgaria's currency from 1881 to 1952, initially equal to the French Franc. During World War II, it was pegged to the German currency. In 1952, a currency reform introduced the second Lev, valued at 1 new Lev for every 100 old Lev.
Interesting Facts About the Bulgarian Lev
The first Lev was closely tied to the French Franc, but later linked to the German currency, leading to several monetary reforms. The current (fourth) Lev is again pegged to the German Mark. Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2005 and is expected to adopt the Euro.
