The Bolivian boliviano is the official currency of Bolivia, issued by the central bank. One boliviano is divided into 100 centavos. Bolivian banknotes come in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200, while coins are available in 1, 2, and 5 bolivianos, as well as 10, 20, and 50 centavos.
History of the Bolivian Boliviano
The boliviano was first introduced in Bolivia in 1864. However, it is not the same currency used in modern-day Bolivia. The old boliviano was in circulation until 1963. The new boliviano was introduced in 1987 and was often confused with the old one, although it was revalued after hyperinflation at a rate of 1,000,000 old bolivianos to 1 new boliviano.
Interesting Facts About the Bolivian Boliviano
In 1987, Bolivian banknotes were reprinted, and temporary denominations of 1, 5, 10, and 50 bolivianos were issued. Despite being temporary, the 5 and 10 boliviano notes are still in use today, although they are quite rare.
