The Albanian Lek is the official currency of Albania, introduced in 1926. It is divided into 100 qindarka, although qindarka coins are no longer in circulation. Currently, the Lek is available in five banknotes – 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 – and five coins – 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100.
History of the Albanian Lek
The Albanian Lek was introduced in February 1926 as Albania's first official currency. Before this, Albania had no official currency and used the gold standard. During World War I, German occupation introduced monetary transactions, leading to the adoption of an official currency.
Interesting Facts About the Lek
The Lek is named after Alexander the Great, whose name is often shortened to leka in Albania. His portrait appeared on one Lek coin, and the reverse side depicted him riding his horse.
